Denise Fleming (Author and Illustrator) is a renowned children’s author and illustrator, born in Toledo, Ohio.  For over twenty years, Denise’s books have been honored with major awards including The ALSC (ALA) Caldecott Honor Book 1994 for In the Small, Small Pond, and numerous “Best Books for Children” awards from many illustrious organizations for a variety of her books.  As a child, Denise participated in classes at the Toledo Museum of Art, creating bold, colorful paintings. Over the years, her work evolved.  Now she works primarily in paper, creating images by pouring colored paper pulp through hand-cut stencils. Denise’s books are known for using words sparingly, using strong words, action words, words that convey movement and sound. They are also known for their use of colors that may not be the colors that nature chooses, but convey the mood and movement of a particular creature or moment. Denise includes her husband, David, and daughter, Indigo, when reviewing words, pictures, and ideas for new books.
